It's on to Rio!

Race for the Environment is soon arriving at its fourth stop. The Volvo Ocean Race yachts are reaching their destination in Rio after a month-long leg, the most challenging one in the history of the Race. Upon arrival in Rio, the yachts will stay put for almost three weeks. During their stay, on March 29th, the Brazilian Scouts Association and the Rio The going gets wet!Scouts will welcome their members to the Rio Scouts Day. During the day, the Scouts will participate in an environment programme which includes several activities from the World Scout Environment Programme. A meet and greet with the Teams is also planned.

LightbulbOn March 28th, the Scout Movement will participate in Earth Hour, a world-wide project for the environment. Between the hours of 20.30- 21.30 (8.30-9.30pm) people all over the world are switching their lights off in a show of effort to save energy. The Scout Movement is an official partner in Earth Hour which is organised by WWF. Why don’t you join too? To find out how, visit their website here.

Since our last newsletter, the Race for the Environment website has more than doubled its membership. On March 1st, Race for the Environment launched a version of the website in Portugese and Swedish and we are now proud to welcome members from Brazil and Sweden.

Can’t find your Scoutfriends on the Race for the Environment website?  Encourage your friends to join too!

Interested to get involved in any of the Scout’s days above, or want to know more about the project? Please send an e-mail to josefin.carlring@scout.se.

MARCH FOCUS:
There needs to be sufficient natural habitat to support native species

HomeWe all need somewhere to live. You need somewhere to sleep, right? Somewhere to buy your food; somewhere to go to school; somewhere to see the doctor; or go to the park? Well it's no different for any other animal on the planet. They all need space to do the things they like to do - and need to do, in order to survive.
Building roads
The number of humans being born gets bigger and bigger every day, which means the number of houses and roads we build, and therefore the amount of countryside and natural habitat we destroy every day gets bigger too.

DeforestationIt is so easy for people to think that another housing development won't make any difference, or another plantation of food crops in a forest won't matter... But every time we spoil natural habitat, we affect the lives of animals and give them less space to live in. Everyone who is young now has the chance to grow up with the right attitude and learn to give animals the space and respect they deserve.

Why not go out for a walk somewhere wild and imagine what kinds of animals could be hiding in the bushes or under the ground? If you sit quietly for a while you'll be surprised at how many insects, birds, and maybe even bigger animals you could see. The more you care about animals, the more you will be able to do to help them. And seeing as there could be as many as 100 million other animal species, it's about time we learned to share our planet with them!
And don't forget, there are loads of different ways to help natural species and their habitats listed on the Race for the Environment website. Check it out and see how many you can tick off!
